Les trois autres membres du Bateau canadien pour Gaza détenues en captivité illégale par Israël sont maintenant en Jordanie – Nimâ Machouf de retour à Montréal ce soir

12 octobre 2025 – Bateau Canadien pour Gaza confirme que la captivité illégale des trois derniers membres de sa mission à bord du bateau Conscience de la Coalition Flottilles pour la liberté (FFC) a pris fin aujourd’hui le 12 octobre. Nikita Stapleton, Sadie Mees, Devoney Ellis étaient en détention illégale pendant 4 jours dans une prison en Israël après le rapt de leur bateau par un commando israélien en violation des lois maritimes en eaux internationales. Elles sont maintenant saines et sauves à Amman en Jordanie.

La captivité de Nimâ Machouf et des deux autres membres de l’équipage du Conscience, Mskwaasin Agnew et Khurram Musti Khan, a pris fin le 10 octobre. Elle sera de retour à Montréal le 12 octobre, où elle tiendra un point de presse à l’aéroport à 18h00, dès son arrivée.

Rappelons qu’Israël n’a aucune juridiction en eaux internationales. Le rapt et la saisie de Conscience et des autres bateaux étaient des violations flagrantes du droit international en plus de défier les ordres contraignants de la Cour Internationale de Justice exigeant un accès humanitaire sans entrave à Gaza. Les volontaires de la FFC ne relevaient pas de la juridiction israélienne et ne peuvaient en aucun cas être criminalisés pour vouloir livrer une aide ou contester un blocus illégal. Le rapt des bateaux et la détention illégale des volontaires peuvent être adéquatement qualifiés d’actes de piraterie et de kidnapping.

La détention illégale des volontaires de la flottille est une autre illustration des pratiques systématiques d’Israël : défier les ordres contraignants de la CIJ, ignorer le droit international protégeant la navigation civile et rejeter les demandes de millions de personnes à travers le monde exigeant la fin du siège illégal et les massacres de palestiniens et le génocide dont les effets se feront sentir pour des années à venir.

3 Remaining Canadians among the International Freedom Flotilla Volunteers Freed from Israel’s Unlawful Detention

The remaining Canadians who were among the international human rights defenders aboard the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC) vessel Conscience have now been released from Israel’s unlawful detention.

Khurram Musti Khan arrives in Toronto today, where Mskwaasin Agnew arrived yesterday. Nimâ Machouf arrives in Montréal today (see announcement in French, below). Devoney Ellis, Nikita Stapleton and Sadie Mees are among the dozens of international volunteers who were deported via Jordan earlier today. They will arrive in Canada tomorrow. The final FFC volunteers released were Huwaida Arraf and Zohar Regev, both dual nationals holding Israeli citizenship, who were wrongfully held under fabricated criminal accusations before being released by Israeli police.

The Freedom Flotilla was sailing in a non-violent direct action to challenge Israel’s illegal blockade of Gaza and to open a sea corridor to Gaza amid the ongoing genocide. The flotilla carried 145 people from 30 countries, including elected officials, journalists, specialized doctors, and over 15000 kilograms of vital aid worth over $110,000 USD in medicines, respiratory equipment, and nutritional supplies for Gaza’s starving hospitals. They were violently intercepted in international waters approximately 120 nautical miles from Gaza’s coast on 8 October 2025—an act that constitutes piracy and a grave breach of international law. This assault followed the earlier abduction of the Global Sumud Flotilla, whose 462 participants have now also been released.

Adalah, the Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel, which represented 145 detainees from FFC and TMTG, reported widespread degrading and ill-treatment by Israeli forces. Testimonies from detainees describe physical and verbal assaults, confiscation of belongings, prolonged exposure to the sun, denial of access to lawyers, and detention in harsh, unsanitary conditions at Ketziot Prison. Food and water were insufficient and hearings took place without prior notice or proper legal representation.

Israel’s armed assault on unarmed civilians in international waters, its seizure of humanitarian vessels, and its kidnapping of participants are clear violations of international maritime and humanitarian law. These crimes further expose the complete impunity that global governments, including the Carney Liberal government in Canada, allow Israel, thus enabling its continued human right abuses.

The Freedom Flotilla Coalition reaffirms that a ceasefire is not enough. Israel’s illegal blockade must end, Gaza must be free, Palestinians must receive unhindered aid as per the binding orders of the International Court of Justice, and all political, social, and human rights of the Palestinian people must be upheldFor more information:

Three Canadian abductees freed; three others still in Israeli prison.

What is the Carney government doing?

While families, friends, and supporters of universal human rights are relieved and happy to know that three of the six Canadian volunteers abducted in international waters have arrived safely in Istanbul, we remain very concerned about the other three Canadians who are among the dozens of international Flotilla volunteers still illegally interned by the Israeli regime in the notorious Ketzi’ot prison. Their ongoing detention—like the boarding and seizure of Flotilla vessels in international waters and the theft of the humanitarian aid on board—are all flagrant violations of international law by the rogue state of Israel. We have to ask: when will the Canadian government act against Israeli lawlessness?

The conditions in the prison where they are held are reported to be appalling, and we are worried for the well-being and health of everyone detained there. We know that those reports of unacceptable conditions pale in comparison to the brutal treatment of over 11,000 Palestinians, including hundreds of children, who are incarcerated by Israel, many without charges or fixed sentences.

While Mskwaasin Agnew (Ontario), Khurram Musti Khan (Ontario), and Nimâ Machouf (Québec) were among those released from illegal incarceration and expelled by the Israeli prison system today, Devoney Ellis, Sadie Mees, and Nikita Stapleton—all from St. John’s, NL—are among the dozens of international volunteers still illegally detained in Israeli prison, possibly because they refuse, on principle, to sign an acknowledgment that they “illegally entered” the state that abducted them in international waters.

We call on Minister Anand and the rest of the Carney Liberal government to take immediate, concrete action to address the ongoing violations of Palestinian human rights by the genocidal apartheid state of Israel. There is no reason to trust that Israel will abide by the terms of the recent “peace deal.” While the genocide by bombing may have paused, the genocide by deliberate starvation will continue until there is unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid to Palestinians in Gaza—without control by Israel—as mandated by the International Court of Justice.

Take action: Call the detainees’ MPs’ constituency offices and demand that each MP contact the Foreign Minister and insist that she call her Israeli counterpart without delay:

Si les familles, les proches et les défenseur·es des droits humains universels sont soulagé·es et heureux·ses d’apprendre que trois des six volontaires canadien·nes enlevé·es en eaux internationales sont arrivé·es sain·es et sauf·ves à Istanbul, nous nous inquiétons beaucoup pour les trois autres Canadiennes qui figurent parmi les dizaines de volontaires internationaux de la Flottille toujours illégalement interné·es par le régime israélien dans la prison tristement célèbre de Ketzi’ot. Leur détention continue—tout comme l’abordage et la saisie des navires de la Flottille en eaux internationales, ainsi que le vol de l’aide humanitaire à bord—constituent des violations flagrantes du droit international par l’État voyou d’Israël. Nous devons poser la question : quand le gouvernement du Canada agira-t-il contre l’illégalité israélienne?

Les conditions de détention dans cette prison seraient épouvantables, et nous craignons pour le bien-être et la santé de toutes les personnes détenues. Nous savons que ces rapports des conditions inacceptables pâlissent néanmoins devant le traitement brutal réservé à plus de 11 000 Palestinien·nes, dont des centaines d’enfants, incarcéré·es par Israël, souvent sans accusation ni peine déterminée.

Alors que Mskwaasin Agnew (Ontario), Khurram Musti Khan (Ontario) et Nimâ Machouf (Québec) font partie des personnes libérées de cette incarcération illégale et expulsées aujourd’hui par le système carcéral israélien, Devoney Ellis, Sadie Mees et Nikita Stapleton—toutes de St. John’s (T.-N.-L.)—comptent parmi les dizaines de volontaires internationaux·les toujours illégalement détenu·es en prison en Israël, possiblement parce qu’elles et ils refusent, par principe, de signer un « reconnaissement » affirmant qu’elles et ils seraient « entré·es illégalement » dans l’État qui les a enlevé·es en eaux internationales.

Nous appelons la ministre Anand et le reste du gouvernement libéral de Carney à prendre des mesures concrètes et immédiates pour faire cesser les violations continues des droits humains des Palestinien·nes par l’État d’apartheid génocidaire d’Israël. Rien ne permet de croire qu’Israël respectera les termes du récent « accord de paix ». Si le génocide par les bombes a pu cesser, le génocide par la famine délibérée se poursuivra tant que l’aide humanitaire ne pourra pas être acheminée sans entrave vers les Palestinien·nes de Gaza—sans contrôle israélien—ainsi que l’ordonne la Cour internationale de Justice.

Le Canada peut et doit faire davantage

Le Canada peut et doit faire davantage pour les volontaires enlevé·es et pour les droits humains du peuple palestinien

Les dernières informations fournies par nos avocat·es (d’Adalah, le Centre juridique pour les droits de la minorité arabe en Israël) après leur visite aux participant·es de la flottille détenu·es illégalement, rapportent que certain·es d’entre eux ont été maltraité·es pendant ou après leur enlèvement par les forces israéliennes. Ces personnes sont maintenant détenues à la tristement célèbre prison de Ktzi’ot et dénoncent la qualité de l’eau et de la nourriture leur étant fournies (https://www.adalah.org/en/content/view/11403). Leur sort reste incertain, mais nous nous inquiétons car les personnes enlevées récemment à bord de la flottille Sumud ont été soumises à des traitements dégradants et inhumains, notamment des violences physiques, des privations de sommeil, des menaces de violences sexuelles, de l’eau et de la nourriture insuffisantes ou insalubres et la confiscation de médicaments. De plus, bien que certains aient signé des documents acceptant leur déportation, rien ne garantit qu’Israël y procédera dans un délai raisonnable. Si certaines visites consulaires ont eu lieu et que certaines expulsions ont commencé, nos avocats continuent de faire pression pour obtenir davantage de visites, le respect de leurs droits en détention et une représentation juridique lors des audiences d’expulsion pour les participant·es internationaux. Tou·tes les Canadien·nes en prison ont vu des avocat·es d’Adalah, mais nous continuons de nous inquiéter pour leur sécurité et leur bien-être.. Le Canada doit agir maintenant.

Par ailleurs, et surtout, nous restons gravement préoccupés par le sort des Palestinien·nes de Gaza. Alors que la presse parle d’un « accord de paix », nous n’avons guère de raisons de nous attendre à ce qu’Israël agisse de bonne foi. L’UNRWA, l’agence internationale chargée de fournir l’aide alimentaire, l’éducation et autres services essentiels aux réfugié·es palestinien·nes, est toujours bannie par Israël et aucune autre agence n’est en mesure de répondre rapidement aux besoins urgents des Palestinien·nes de Gaza. Nous réitérons ce qu’a déclaré Francesca Albanese (https://x.com/FranceskAlbs/status/1976226573604061522) : tout accord doit inclure un accès sans entrave à l’aide humanitaire pour les Palestinien·nes de Gaza, et les mesures prévues doivent être exécutoires. La société civile, dont l’opposition au projet sioniste ne cesse de prendre de l’ampleur, continuera à faire pression pour faire ouvrir un corridor humanitaire vers Gaza, par voie maritime et terrestre.

Nous avons également peu confiance dans les prétendues « escortes militaires » pour nos flottilles : si le gouvernement canadien ou d’autres gouvernements décident d’enfin prendre au sérieux la protection des droits de leurs citoyen·nes et des droits des Palestinien·nes en vertu du droit international, ils peuvent par exemple :

  • mettre en œuvre un embargo bilatéral complet et immédiat sur les armes vers Israël
  • mettre fin à l’accord préférentiel de libre-échange entre le Canada et Israël (CIFTA)
  • rompre ou au minimum réduire les relations diplomatiques avec Israël
  • soutenir la prochaine motion « Unis pour la paix » à l’ONU
  • envoyer sans délai leurs propres navires d’aide humanitaire vers Gaza.

Les Européen·nes, entre autres, nous ont montré que lorsque le peuple mène, les dirigeant·es finissent par suivre. Nous devons maintenir la pression sur le gouvernement du Canada pour qu’il devienne le leader en matière de droits humains et de paix qu’il prétend être.

Canada can and must do more

Canada can and must do more for abducted volunteers and for Palestinian human rights

According to the latest update from our lawyers (of Adalah – the Legal Centre for Arab Minority Rights in Israel) who visited the illegally detained international volunteers, some were handled roughly during or after their abduction by Israeli forces. They have now been transferred to the infamous Ktzi’ot prison and there have been complaints about the quality of water and food prisoners are given (https://www.adalah.org/en/content/view/11403). What will happen to them now remains uncertain, but we are worried as the recent Sumud flotilla abductees have reportedly been subject to inhuman and degrading treatment, including physical abuse, sleep deprivation, threats of sexual violence, insufficient or unclean food and water and the confiscation of medicines. Based on what happened with the Sumud Flotilla abductees, signing papers accepting to be deported also does not guarantee them Israel will do so in a reasonable amount of time. While some consular visits have happened and some deportations have begun, our lawyers continue to press for more visits and for legal representation at deportation hearings for international participants. All the Canadians in prison have seen lawyers from Adalah but we remain concerned for their safety and their wellbeing. Canada must act NOW.

On the other hand, and more importantly, we continue to be very concerned about the Palestinians of Gaza. While the press talks of a “peace deal”, our movements have little reason to trust that Israel will behave in good faith. UNRWA, the international agency which delivers food aid, education and other vital services to Palestinian refugees, is still outlawed by Israel and there is no other agency that can help meet the urgent needs of the Palestinians of Gaza in a timely manner. We reiterate what Francesca Albanese said (https://x.com/FranceskAlbs/status/1976226573604061522): that any deal must include unfettered aid access to the Palestinians of Gaza, and the provisions must be enforceable. Our growing civil society movements will continue to press for a people’s corridor to Gaza, by sea and by land.

We also have little faith in purported “military escorts” for our flotillas: if the Canadian or other governments decide to finally get serious about protecting the rights of their citizens and the rights of Palestinians under international law, they can for example:

  • Immediately implement a full TWO-way arms embargo against Israel
  • end the preferential Canada-Israel Free Trade Agreement (CIFTA
  • sever or at least reduce diplomatic relations with Israel
  • support an upcoming “Unite for Peace” motion at UN
  • send their own aid boats directly to Gaza without delay.
    Europeans and other peoples have shown us that when the people lead, “leaders” eventually follow. We have to keep up the pressure in Canada to become a leader for human rights and peace.

Mise à jour : 145 humanitaires bénévoles, dont 6 canadien·nes, retenus en otage par Israël.

8 octobre 2025 – La Coalition de la Flottille de la Liberté (FFC) et Thousand Madleens to Gaza (TMTG) confirment que les neuf navires ont été attaqués et arraisonnés illégalement par l’armée israélienne – Gaza Sunbird, Alaa Al-Najajr, Anas Al-Sharif, Abd Elkarim Eid, Conscience, Leïla Khaled, Milad, Soul of my Soul et Umm Saad.

Parmi les 145 humanitaires, six citoyen·nes canadien·nes ont été enlevé·es depuis maintenant 12 heures – Mskwaasin Agnew, Nimâ Machouf, Sadie Mees, Nikita Stapleton, Devoney Ellis et Khurram Musti Khan.

Ces personnes sont actuellement transférées de force et illégalement en détention sous la garde d’Israël, un État désigné par l’ONU comme pratiquant l’apartheid. Aux dernières nouvelles, contraints illégalement, certains bateaux ont été escortés de force vers le port d’Ashdod, suite à leur arraisonnement illégal en eaux internationales.

L’aide humanitaire vitale d’une valeur de plus de 110 000 USD (médicaments, équipements respiratoires et suppléments nutritionnels) destinée aux hôpitaux de Gaza a également été confisquée.

Nous nous inquiétons des risques immédiats auxquels ces personnes pourraient être soumises, tels que l’ont été les membres de la flottille globale Sumud dans les derniers jours. L’enlèvement et la torture de ces activistes par Israël ont été fermement condamnés par des organisations internationales de défense des droits de la personne comme des violations flagrantes du droit international.

Dans un communiqué récent, Amnistie internationale Australie rapporte des cas d’abus graves leur ayant été infligés: brutalités, privation de sommeil, menaces, humiliantes, confiscation de médicaments, conditions de détention dégradantes et insalubres, etc. David Adler, participant à la Flottille Sumud, témoigne de ces abus dans un récent texte :

« Nous avons été kidnappés, déshabillés, ligotés, les yeux bandés, puis envoyés dans un camp d’internement à bord d’un fourgon de police, sans nourriture, sans eau et sans assistance juridique. Pendant les cinq jours qui ont suivi, nous avons subi des tortures psychologiques intermittentes… Bien sûr, tout cela n’est rien comparé au traitement que subissent les Palestiniens chaque jour. »

Israël détient actuellement 11 000 Palestinien·nes en détention, dont des enfants, et les abus à leur encontre sont bien documentés, incluant la torture psychologique et physique, les agressions sexuelles et les viols de captifs.

Israël continue d’agir en toute impunité. Il a défié les ordres contraignants de la Cour Internationale de Justice, ignoré le droit international protégeant la navigation civile et rejeté les demandes de millions de personnes à travers le monde exigeant la fin du siège illégal et du génocide.

La FFC et TMTG exigent du gouvernement canadien d’agir à :

  • La fin du blocus illégal et meurtrier d’Israël sur Gaza ;
  • La fin du génocide à Gaza ;
  • La libération immédiate de tous les volontaires en otage;
  • La livraison immédiate de l’aide humanitaire directement aux Palestiniens, indépendamment du contrôle israélien ;
  • Une prise de responsabilité complète pour les assauts militaires perpétrés contre nos bateaux.

Six Canadian volunteers still illegally detained by Israel

Less than 24 hours after the illegal seizure by Israeli forces, Conscience is now at the Israeli port of Ashdod and, as we know from previous incidents, we can expect Israel to use inhumane and punishing treatment on some humanitarian volunteers from all over the world. Those close to Canadians from on board Conscience have expressed their great concern about possible risk to which the humanitarian volunteers from Conscience might be subjected. “Given what happened to the Global Sumud Flotilla in recent days, we are very worried.” said Amir Khadir, Nimâ Machouf’s spouse and a former Member of National Assembly for Québec Solidaire.

We now have an initial update about the participants’ situation from the legal team which represents them, Palestinian-Israeli lawyers from Adalah (the Center for Arab Minority RIghts in Israel https://www.adalah.org/en) who were able to speak with some but not all our international participants before their transfer tonight to Ketziot Prison. Some report being subjected to violence during the interception, and the lawyers have requested to meet with them tomorrow. It is likely that all parliamentarians will be deported tonight or tomorrow morning, and tribunal hearings for others will take place over the next two days. The Adalah lawyers have already demanded to be present at all hearings and will provide further updates soon.

Time is of essence. The Canadian government should act NOW and demand in no unequivocal terms the immediate release of the kidnapped delegates who were on board the Conscience and the other boats of the flotilla. Canada should also sanction Israel, severing or reducing diplomatic ties as a consequence for the apartheid state’s disregard for international law.

INTERNATIONAL WATERS – As the world reels from Israel’s illegal attacks on the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) just days ago, where over 450 activists were unlawfully detained under inhumane conditions, another wave of humanitarian vessels is now just 200 nautical miles from Gaza’s shores. 

Led by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition’s (FFC) flagship Conscience, a vessel dedicated to international media and medical teams, and 8 sailboats from Thousand Madleens to Gaza (TMTG), this flotilla boats carries over 150 activists from 30 countries, including elected officials, journalists, specialized doctors, and vital aid worth over $110,000 USD in medicines, respiratory equipment, and nutritional supplies for Gaza’s starving hospitals. 

With live-streaming journalists and frontline medics aboard, any attempt to board or blockade this flotilla risks further exposing Israel and its illegal siege to unfiltered global scrutiny, making interference not just a humanitarian crime, but a public relations catastrophe.

The FFC and TMTG are doubling down in this coordinated wave, refusing to let Israel’s violence deter them. The Conscience—a ship first targeted by bureaucratic sabotage in 2024 and later bombed twice by Israeli drones near Malta in May 2025—stands as a beacon of defiance, crewed by trauma surgeons, anesthesiologists, psychiatrists, and OB-GYN specialists ready to provide critical care alongside Gaza’s Ministry of Health. 

The flotilla’s approach, expected within 24-48 hours, comes as international condemnation swells. Protests have erupted from London to Kuala Lumpur, with calls for sanctions and UN intervention mounting. Yet, with Conscience‘s media setup beaming live updates, the cost of interception skyrockets: real-time footage of any aggression could galvanize millions, amplifying Israel’s siege and impunity like never before.

The Freedom Flotilla Coalition and Thousand Madleens to Gaza urges immediate action:

Demand Safety for Canadians challenging the Israeli Blockade

Right now, it is confirmed that at least one Canadian citizen and one Canadian permanent resident has been arrested by Israelies as part of Sumud Flotilla, and there are 6 more has set off from Italy in a new Freedom Flotilla (see https://freedomflotilla.org/ffc-tmtg-conscience-tracker ).

Canadians are either detained or threatened at sea simply for delivering food, medicine, and hope to Palestinians trapped under an illegal blockade. These brave Canadians are doing what the international community has failed to do: breaking the silence, standing up against genocide, and bringing urgent aid where it is most needed.
